The Romans had conquered Britain except for that troublesome northern bit, now called Scotland.

The people up there did not want to be part of Rome (This is an example of an understatement.).

Hail, Caesar!

So the Romans decided to wall off the the north to keep the "wild barbarians" out.

In 122, Emperor Hadrian orders a wall built, to divide the Romans from the barbarians.

The Antonine Wall

The Antonine Wall was built about 20 years later farther north and deep inside Scotland.
Abandoned about 22 years later, too hard to defend and maintain.
